Max’s at 80: A Legacy of Home, Heart, and Filipino Hospitality

Max's celebrating 80 years!
Max's celebrating 80 years!

When a brand has been part of Filipino homes for eight decades, its milestones become ours too. Last October 18, Max’s marked its 80th year where it all began -- at the original Scout Tuazon branch in Quezon City -- celebrating generations of family, food, and the comforting taste of home.

And as a nostalgic throwback to 1945, Max’s brought back its iconic Php5 Fried Chicken for one day only. In just a single Saturday, they served 2,884 half spring fried chickens -- a delicious reminder of where the story first began.

A Legacy of Togetherness

Max’s journey started in 1945, when Maximo Gimenez welcomed American soldiers into his home for hearty meals and good company. What began as simple hospitality soon grew into something bigger -- a restaurant that became part of the Filipino story.

Max’s has always been more than a restaurant. It’s a feeling of being at home, of being together with family
shared Jim Fuentabella, Vice President of Marketing of Max’s Group.
This anniversary is about celebrating that shared warmth with the people who made it all possible.

Inside the 80th Anniversary Celebration at Scout Tuazon

Dining at Scout Tuazon branch for the 80th anniversary felt like being part of living history. Max’s transformed its home into a nostalgic yet creative space where tradition and modern Filipino artistry came together beautifully.

Here's a quick glimpse from the media preview last OCT16:

Guests were greeted with the soulful rhythms of jazz -- a nod to postwar Manila and the early days of Max’s. The celebration also introduced the brand’s official 80th anniversary theme song, “The Doors Are Open”, a jazz-inspired piece that captures the feeling of coming home and celebrating shared warmth through the years.

The Birthday Cake Room

Each space inside the branch told a story:
  • The Birthday Cake Room, styled by Goods From Scratch, featured handcrafted pastries and cakes made exclusively for the celebration -- a sweet fusion of tradition and creativity
  • The Living Room, reimagined by Studio Yakal, recreated the cozy charm of Maximo Gimenez’s original home. With vintage furniture, soft lighting, and classic OPM tunes, it felt like stepping into a family gathering from another era
  • The Max’s Museum, curated by Ryan Reyes of Tarzeer Pictures with creative input from Judd Figuerres, Gio Panlilio, and Paul Jatayna, showcased rare photos, memorabilia, and artifacts that beautifully trace Max’s journey through the decades. This museum will be open to the public until December 2025, giving fans a chance to rediscover the brand’s story up close
  • The General Store -- a reimagined retail space inspired by both the Filipino sari-sari store and the American general store -- offered limited-edition anniversary merchandise to bring home a piece of Max’s heritage
  • The Maximo Dining Hall recreated the early days of the restaurant with vintage tableware and family-style dining. Guests enjoyed classic dishes like Fried Chicken, Crispy Pata, Lumpiang Shanghai, and Sizzling Sisig, all served in the familiar warmth that has defined Max’s for generations

A Heartfelt Celebration of Heritage

The atmosphere was filled with nostalgia from the food to the music to the small details that reminded everyone of home. Each corner of the venue felt thoughtfully designed to celebrate not just 80 years of Max’s, but the memories built around every shared meal.

Carolyn Trota-Salud, President of Max’s Restaurant

Max’s has always been about people
said Carolyn Trota-Salud, President of Max’s Restaurant.
It’s the laughter, the heartwarming stories, and the memories shared over every meal. As we look to the future, our commitment is to keep that feeling alive. We remain as a brand grounded in timeless values, with the customer at our core, just as our founders envisioned through their tireless work and purposeful vision.

The Taste of Home That Lasts Generations

Eighty years later, Max’s Restaurant continues to be more than a restaurant. It’s a shared tradition, a part of our families’ stories. The 80th anniversary celebration was not just a tribute to the past, but a promise that the doors of Max’s will always be open -- welcoming every Filipino home, one “sarap to the bones” meal at a time.
