Repertory Philippines Arsenic and Old Lace 

This April 2018, Repertory Philippines (or REP) goes for a classic Broadway hit by Joseph Kesselring -- Arsenic and Old Lace. This epic dark comedy has been a favorite in London and New York having played over a thousand times in 1941. It has further gained popularity when it was made into a film of the same name, starring Cary Grant.

Jay Valencia-Glorioso as Martha Brewster, Joy Virata as Abby Brewster, Nelsito Gomez as Mortimer Brewster, and Barbara Jance as Elaine Harper 

The elaborate setup captured my attention even before the play has started. I also love the lighting and how it was effective in depicting the different times of the day. The doors are functional, even the windows, there's an upper floor which was fully used, and a cellar... the controversial cellar!

Robbie Guevarra as Dr. Einstein, Apollo Abraham as Jonathan Brewster 

The story started slow, script heavy, unassuming of what lies ahead. There's the old Brewster sisters played by Joy Virata and Jay Valencia-Glorioso, who evidently rendered elegance and charm, and their nephew, Mortimer Brewster portrayed by Nelsito Gomez.

Gabe Mercado as Dr. Harper, Dingdong Rosales as Officer Klein, and Luis Marcelo as Officer Brophy 

The flow went by and just at the point when I'm about to get wearied and question the genre of the play, the anomaly in the house was revealed! From then on, it got crazy and hilarious!

Steven Conde as Mr. Witherspoon 

It's the kind of comedy that you will hesitate to laugh because of the subject matter so you'd try to man up and restrain yourself. But as the plot continues to get crazier, you'd soon find yourself chuckling... then outrageously laughing! Classic dark comedy indeed.

Jeremy Domingo as Teddy Brewster, and Gabe Mercado as Lt. Rooney 

The two sweet and seemingly-harmless old ladies telling you that they've "put into rest" an old man, placed under a window seat, and casually telling you to just forget about it. How insane could it get?

The Cast 

A crazy family that could even get crazier than it seemed. Insert brothers where one is delusional, the other is delinquent. Add some witty scripts and timely delivery. Direct Jamie Wilson surely made his directorial debut in Arsenic and Old Lace an epic one! Included in the cast are Jeremy Domingo, Apollo Abraham, Barbara Jance, Robbie Guevarra, Gabe Mercado, Steven Conde, Dingdong Rosales, and Luis Marcelo.

The turn of events will leave a wrinkle on your forehead, yet a wide open mouth ready to cackle anytime. Find out for yourself what I'm talking about and watch Arsenic and Old Lace!
