Borough: Chocolate Chicken Wings, Popcorn Calamari, Haystack Onion Rings, and more!

Borough

Those several mirrors on the upper wall, the bar vibe yet cozy atmosphere, my gut says I've been in Borough before. Though it took a week before I realized that the first time I was here was during Nuffnang's 5th Birthday/Anniversary four years ago.

And now I'm back at this place, again with bloggers, but this time for Team Aldous' Blogger Quiz Night. It's a time when we gather, team up, drain our brain cells for some trivial questions, but get to enjoy Borough's best selling appetizers and bar chows.

best selling appetizers

Buffalo Chicken Wings (360Php)
Classic hot and spicy wings originally from Buffalo, New York. Served with real blue cheese dip
Buffalo Chicken Wings

First up is Buffalo Chicken Wings. It, indeed, has the classic buffalo wings flavor. I like that its spiciness is just mild (not "screaming" spicy) and enjoyable, especially when dipped in blue cheese sauce.

Chocolate Chicken Wings (280Php)
For the adventurous. Baked wings coated in cocoa and cinnamon. Served with cilantro sour cream
Chocolate Chicken Wings

Chocolate Chicken Wings is unique, something I've never encountered before (so far), and interesting. I have no expectations on this but the idea of it will tickle a customer's curiosity. For some reasons, I find it spicier than Buffalo Wings that the sour cream sauce really helped in balancing the overall flavor. Also, I wasn't really able to taste the "chocolate" or at least the cocoa probably because my taste buds were already directed to the cinnamon taste (which I'm not a fan of). But yes, I would still recommend this as something new to try.

Hummus (130Php)
Blended chickpeas mixed with extra virgin olive oil and garnished with paprika. Served with homemade pita bread
Hummus and Pita Bread

Hummus is a simple yet filling appetizer. The hummus has that powdery texture that matched well with their homemade pita bread.

Popcorn Calamari (290Php)
Popcorn-crusted fried squid tossed with extra popcorn for good measure. Served with clarified chili butter
Popcorn Calamari

Ah, Popcorn Calamari is something that I enjoyed as well. Popcorn as part of the calamari's coating? Again, new for me yet one of my favorites that night. Usually, if the squid is rubbery, or even a bit chewy, I prefer not to have another bite. But this one is good, crunchy on the outside while the squid itself is tender. And yes, I like the matching chili butter sauce that goes with it.

Fries in a Basket (150Php)
A whole basket of fries. Served with Borough's special "Odessa Sauce"
Fries in a Basket

For Fries in a Basket, I guess the fries is not much out of ordinary. But it is the dip, the special dip, that would make one reach for another potato stick.

Haystack Onion Rings (180Php)
Piled high. Served with barbecue sauce and sour cream onion dip
Haystack Onion Rings

And my most favorite appetizer/bar chow goes to Haystack Onion Rings! For one, I love onion rings in general. Second, Borough's version comes in two dips: barbecue and sour cream onion; either is good. Last but not the list, it's thin and crispy and flavorful on its own that I can actually enjoy it even without the dips! Yes, I want more of this!

As if the night couldn't even be more fun, Borough's hot chef (wait, I only use "hot" for food), Chef Cuit Kaufman, joined us in the event. Overall, it was a great and trivial quiz night (even though our team didn't win) and it was a pleasure to meet the man behind the food we had that night. I hope to try their main dishes, pizza, pasta, and burgers in the future, especially that they are known as a place for comfort food.
